When
it comes to athletes everywhere and achieving peak performance health,
there is one thing they all have in common and that is being powerful
through the hips.
Regardless
of the sport, athletes want to perform at their best every single time
they take the field, the court, the cage, the ring or the ice.
In
order to do that, we must have healthy, strong and mobile hips: Hips
that function without pain, tightness or lack of mobility.
A
balance in strength exists through the hip flexors, the iliopsoas group
and gluteus group which helps keep the body moving and performing at
its absolute best.
The ‘power zone’ lies at the center of the human body.
Sure,
the arms and legs are super important for any person or elite athlete,
but the source of true power resides within the hips.
Talk to any coach or trainer all over the world over and they will agree with this simple assessment.
Without the ability to bend, jump, twist, dive, run or move effectively, an athlete is dead in their tracks, literally.
Athletes
from all backgrounds across the world spend a great deal of time
working on the balance of strength within their hip area.
They stretch, strengthen, massage, or anything else that will help them improve hip function.
Without
even realizing it, athletes are helping to not only improve their
physical performance but also their mental and emotional function.
Is it any wonder why after doing something physically active, even just a good long walk, you feel emotionally uplifted?
Athletes and others that push their bodies in sports, in the gym or at home, simply feel better and more energetic.
Case
and point: the body was designed to move and not be in a seated
position all the time. But unfortunately for most people, sitting is a
large part of our lives and the center of the body is restricted and
stressed out.
But that’s NOT the case for many athletes.
The
messaging that goes from the lower body to the upper body and back
again has less roadblocks, less stress and the signals are stronger.
When stronger signals are passing from head to toe in an athlete, their power production is improved dramatically.
And as stated at the very beginning, when you increase power, you achieve peak performance health.
Running Time: 25 mins approx (one dvd of a set of 6)
Featuring: Russell Stutely
Anthony Pillage
Production Quality: Video quality is fine with fairly static camera work. There are a few problems with the sound midway through when someone can be heard walking about and opening doors ,it is slightly distracting but doesn't last long
Intro The dvd starts with a 5 minute introduction from Russell Stutely in which he explains a little about himself and his studies of Chinese medicine and its application in self defence. He explains that his approach to pressure points is realistic and not esoteric. He also says that things must work under pressure and you need the self defence mindset of going in and getting the job done or else nothing will work,
The section concludes with instruction to take it easy with your partner and treat them with respect
Main section This part of the dvd explains how the body works in opposites and how to divide it into quadrants to identify weak areas of the body.
Different points of the body are pointed out such as the knee, elbow, shoulder and small of back and how they can be affected to take someone's balance. Attacking at an angle and how the balance points aren't static is also covered. He also goes into how to combine quadrants to enhance the effect and how misaligning the body helps further
OVERALL A short introduction dvd to to rest of the set which does a good job of explaining the basics of balance and how the body works 7/10

ABOUT ME I am a third Dan black belt kick boxing instructor with over ten years teaching experience, and knowledge of various martial arts. I have a good eye for what works and what doesn't. I also have a number of students who have tried out these techniques with great success
This 2nd disc from Power Black 6 DVD Set covers chokes, strangles, neck cranks,a variety of arm locks ,a few wrist locks and a couple of take downs from the holds
IT CONTAINS OVER 18 DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES INCLUDING
● The “Spin and Pass out” a very cool choke performed with one arm (the person this is demonstrated on actually passes out when a very low level of force is applied)
● The “Hitch Hiker” a combination arm lock/neck crank and strangle that I've not seen anywhere else
● The “Lion Killer” a standard rear choke
● The “Power Black Lion Killer” a small adjustment to the entry technique makes a massive difference to the result
● The “Steering Wheel” a neck crank/head twist take down
Running Time: 38 mins approx (one dvd out of a set of 6)
Featuring: Russell Stutely
Master John Andrews
Production Quality: Very good quality, excellent camera work .The camera only zooms in when necessary to clarify a point and does not like many martial arts DVDs zoom all the time and obscure the techniques
The disc starts with a very short introduction from Russell Stutely explaining the contents of the dvd then its straight into the action
The first technique shown by Russell Stutely is the “Spin and Pass out” a one armed choke the explanation is clear and concise, explaining the entry technique and how to apply the finish. All the small details that make this effective are explained. This is a very tight choke and the person being demonstrated on actually does pass out
Next up is Master John Andrews with a cross choke for the street using an outdoor jacket rather than a gi. This is a technique that you will have seen if you have been involved in martial arts for any length of time ,but is set up with a nice entry and again the fine points that make it effective are explained thoroughly
The DVD continues in this format with Russell Stutely and Master John Andrews alternating demonstrating the techniques sometimes both showing a variation of the same technique ,sometimes a different one
Are these techniques effective? Yes very, these are simple no messing about joint locks, chokes, cranks and strangles. All demonstrated from at least two angles so you can get a clear idea of what is happening. In a major difference to most technique based DVDs they are shown with entry technique be it from a grab ,hold punch or whatever
Do I need to know pressure points to use these Power Black Joint Breaks and Pass Outs? No they rely on simple physics and leverage which are all explained in detail. References are made to points to release the neck and turn the arm but these are in addition to the main techniques,The cranks, chokes and locks are always set up with some kind of strike and sometimes a variety of strikes and movements are used to make room to apply them. References are made to spirals and waves to increase the power (found on disc 1 and players to the game) but these are on top of the main technique and often are overkill. These locks are absolute agony. You might think when watching that they are being exaggerated but when you try them for yourself you'll find out they most definitely not!
Yes you will have seen some of these moves before ,but not with the level of detail shown here and there are plenty more shown that you certainly won't have seen that are very effective
The rest of the moves cover defences against punches, grabs and various clinches, with some having an extra demonstration of a take down straight off the lock
OVER ALL A clear concise dvd with a fair amount of well described techniques, you will find plenty of easily applicable moves on this dvd
RATING 9/10

ABOUT ME I am a third Dan black belt kick boxing instructor with over ten years teaching experience, and knowledge of various martial arts. I have a good eye for what works and what doesnt. I also have a number of students who have tried out these techniques with great success
Running Time: 53 mins approx
Featuring: Russell Stutely
John Andrews
Production Quality: Video quality is good with demonstrations from various angles and some points zoomed in to clarify small details that make the locks/strike effective
Intro: Russell Stutely introduces Master John Andrews who performs all the techniques in this DVD. John Andrews currently holds the rank of 4th Dan in Ju Jitsu and 5th Dan in OCFM & is OCFM’s National Grappling Coach
Main section:
The first technique shown is a double palm (BAR technique) to enter against an aggressive assailant followed by a forearm to the neck leading to a standing neck crank,a simple effective technique
The next move is against a double wrist grab ,although I don’t think this method of attack is as common as people make out ,he does point out that you should start your counter as soon as possible and not let them lock on their attack. This technique is a wrist lock but is made effective by a number of strikes en route to the lock.
A Wicked arm bar against a double lapel grab is shown next this is a very good lock and should be practised with great care
A few more standing attack counters are shown before moving onto a section dealing with take down attempts
Punch defences are demonstrated ,there are pressure points used but they are always coupled with striking so you aren’t left hanging fiddling about trying to find a tiny point. You are shown how to easily hit numerous points at once and follow ups if you miss or the strike/lock is ineffective
Take downs and throws are shown followed by a lock or strike to incapacitate an assailant ,fine points are emphasised which makes all the difference in making these moves effective, including how to best use your strength and safety considerations
Next up is a section showing various judo/bjj control positions on the ground again with tweaks and variations to increase their effectiveness. A drill is shown to help you learn how to flow from position to position and control your opponent
Escaping guard is shown, leading to ankle locks and some good detail on neck cranks
The DVD finishes with a section on arm bars and neck cranks from mount
OVERALL: A pretty good DVD plenty of content and just enough repitition without wasting space. Street and sport applications are shown and there is something for everyone. As with all instructional DVDS I have found some techniques just don't work for some people and certainly won't work if you dont train them. Train hard train safe 9/10 (experienced grappler 7/10)

I could write another 20 pages here just to outline all that you get in the "Secret Sessions" DVDs, but remember how I said I do not have time to chit-chat? :-)
Alright then. I've given you all the information. The choice is yours. Get this information for yourself. Or, sit on your duff and it will pass you by. I sure know what I would do, because this is once-in-a-lifetime KILLER stuff that you can't find anywhere else.
I get asked this question all the time "What are your favourite Points?". Well apart from the obvious "Whatever I can hit at that moment in time" I do have a few that I just "gel" with.
I will give you the point name and then you can look them up if you wish:
St5
GB20
St4
LI18
St25
Lv/GB Crossing
GB31
Sp6
Sp9/10
St12
Now... what I would do if I was starting again in learning points and armed with the above information... is TRAIN those Points like mad...Find out where they are... see if I can attack them in training. Find different ways to utilise them.
Hit them, grind my elbow into them, grind my thumb upto the 2nd knuckle into them.
Basically train them till I "owned them".
Make sure that I knew what they did, how they worked and why they worked.
Just doing that with the above Points will give you a TON of great training time.
Remember to use the safety protocols previously mentioned.
Now move back to your technique analysis and see where and when any / all of these points become available to you! Start S-L-O-W-L-Y and A-N-A-L-Y-S-E correctly.
When a point is available.. HIT IT.. .BUT START LIGHT.. It is better to get NO REACTION then hit too hard and hurt your training partner.
When you strike the point.. you MUST ensure that your strike has penetration.. simply hitting the surface of the skin WILL NOT WORK... Doing this will give the usual results that MOST people get... i.e a mixed reaction.
Now.. onto the safety parameters:
Your training partner and you will have a numbering system - from 0 to 10
0 = nothing, no pain, no reaction
10= you hit me far too hard you stupid ?)*ing idiot.. now its my turn
Start around the 2-4 area and G-R-A-D-U-A-L-L-Y build up to 7-8
Now.. REMEMBER this... the numbering system is for the person being HIT... not for the hitter. Your no 5 could be your training partners 10 and vice versa.. so ALWAYS start light and then together you will find a power level that you can work at.
By ensuring that you keep to this safety protocol you can train points longer and more rapidly than crashing strikes home to see the effect.
Once you have done this with all your techniques and started slowly and built up to a decent pace, we can then move onto making the points EVEN MORE effective and also onto pressure testing what you have done so far
Learn how to knock out ,learn how to knock someone out with one punch.Find out where the pressure points are on the body.Find out where to hit,how to hit.Learn how to double or even triple your striking power.Apply pressure points in punches, kicks, knees ,elbows, locks, chokes and strangles
Take your skills to the next level with knowledge of Black Pressure points. How to knock out, generate massive power with less effort, apply your knowledge to different techniques and arts.Balance points, pressure points, technique enhancers and more on this 6 DVD set
Learn how to take your opponents balance to deliver a devastating pressure point knock out,a take down or simply escape.See and learn how the body is balanced and how you can use this in your art or on its own
Take your skills to the next level with knowledge of Black Pressure points. How to knock out, generate massive power with less effort, apply your knowledge to different techniques and arts.Balance points, pressure points, technique enhancers and more on this 6 DVD set
The second disc from Pressure Points Black 6 DVD Set covers fine details that can be used to enhance various techniques to make them more effective with less effort.
Featuring: Russell Stutely
Ian
Production Quality: Video quality is fine with fairly static camera work everything is clear and in full view at all times. There are some background noises of doors closing but these are fairly faint and don’t detract from the production
Intro: At the start of the DVD Russell Stutely explains about how during sparring, training or even real fights or sports fights sometimes you will put what you think is everything into a technique yet it ends up having little effect ,but conversely a seemingly effortless light shot can result in a knockout. He explains how techniques are broken down into little separate parts that make them effective when combined and how you should strive to understand what makes a technique work and aim so that every technique is effortless yet effective.
Main section: The main section of the DVD shows a number of these small parts of a technique or technique enhancers and how they can be used. The first is a heavy hand so that when a shot lands it is more powerful because of the heavy hand,A drill is shown so that you can develop this heavy hand. It can be anything a heavy, foot, head, shoulder, elbow strike or even the whole body for a clinch or grappling situation.
He stresses the importance of practising and getting the principle into your mind so that you will always have it available.
Next is the waveform which is a way of optimising the whole body and coordinating its power and weight into a strike. He demonstrates how this works with a close quarter elbow to the body explaining how the weight shifts and supplies the drive which adds the massive power to the strike. He also explains how the first two technique enhancers can be combined for greater effect even before you add in the rest which are shown on this disc. A drop step is shown which is a classic method of adding power and drive to a strike.
The next technique enhancer is vibration which sounds odd but is clearly explained so you can understand how to use it to enhance your technique ,it is shown dropping Ian just from an arm grab! A method is shown so you can practise this technique using your TV and how to escape from grabs and holds using vibration, sounds weird but it works well. Breathing is added to the mix to increase the power of strikes remembered by think it ,breath it ,do it.
OVERALL: A very good DVD that shows numerous easy to learn and apply concepts that can be used to enhance techniques whether for pressure point knock outs, self defence or sport fighting 9/10

ABOUT ME: I am a third Dan black belt kick boxing instructor with over ten years teaching experience, and knowledge of various martial arts. I have a good eye for what works and what doesn't. I also have a number of students who have tried out these techniques with great success
OK... I think I have made my point about the importance of Balance and how you should understand this subject inside out, upside down and the wrong way round... as they say!
The next area that you need to understand BEFORE you even start to learn Pressure Points is Power Generation or as we call it Waveforms.
I often get asked this question:"I see people on the net doing light touch K.O's, so why do I need to learn to hit hard to use Pressure Point's?"
There is a simple and easy answer to this:
Most of those clips are fake in one way or another
The genuine ones are DEMO'S
So, we can ignore the fake ones.. Onto the genuine ones... they are DEMO'S.
This means that they are demonstrations of what CAN be achieved... there is NO animosity in any attack etc etc. This is the reason they can go so light and make it work.
Once you start to up the aggression, speed and ferocity of the attack, so you must up those same qualities in the defence. This is where there is a real danger of doing too much damage... which would bring us onto a another area.. how to train Points correctly and safely.. which I will cover over the coming weeks.
This is the EXACT reason why we need to be able to hit like a freight train on steroids...We MUST have real stopping power in all our strikes. We MUST be able to hit that hard that it does not matter if we "miss" the point!
I like to put it this way... If in a fight I see an opportunity to strike St5 on the Jaw... I want to hit that point so hard that I snap the jaw in half... if I hit the point great.. job more effective.. If I miss the point.. so what? I am still hitting really f$%^ing hard.. so wherever I land my shot should hurt!
What Are Waveforms?
They are NOT strikes
A waveform is a whole body movement that MASSIVELY increases the efficiency and effectiveness of what you are doing
It is a method to generate as much of your bodyweight through a given technique as possible
It MUST ALSO be understood that this should not be at the detriment of other areas such as, your own balance, ability to move, ability to defend etc.
Out and out power is great and obviously works.. but only when you have made that moment in time to land your shot... unless you happen to just connect of course!
So, the waveform movement can be applied to each and every technique, from each and every art to increase the effectiveness of that technique. The waveform is nothing more than a study of the planes and ranges of movement as applied to the Martial Arts, in the context of power generation, efficiency of movement, speed and ease of operation.
When I teach this area of what we do.. I can usually DOUBLE everyones striking impact in under ONE hour.. and in fact proved this live on DVD for New Approach Publishing (NAP) during the filming for Power Black 6 DVD Set
Don't worry.. we will move onto Pressure Point stuff next time! Promise!
OK.. how does learning Balance Points help with learning Pressure Points?
This is a bit like one of those "trust me" times. There are certain parts of the Martial Arts that we REALLY need to understand BEFORE we start to learn Pressure Points. Balance Points is one of those aspects that MUST be understood to gain the most benefit from Points.
Not only to gain the most benefit, but also to enable you to learn and apply the Pressure Points at a VASTLY increased rate.
BP's are one of those aspects that seem to be most overlooked by most Martial Artists... It is ALWAYS an eye opener when these areas of the body are shown, explained and trained. Those from a grappling background for example are able to make use of them immediately in their throws and takedowns... and then on the ground as well... especially once they understand the "principles" upon which this is based.
I like to quote these lines in order to show the MASSIVE importance of Balance:
"If your opponent is completely OFF-Balance and using all their strength and ability to try to regain it.. meanwhile you are IN distance and completely IN-Balance you are in a position to hit them with everything you have got. Do you think this has increased your chances of success?"
"If you rob your opponent of his balance, it does not matter how big or strong he is at that moment in time... he will be using all his strength to try and re-gain his balance"
"If you have someone on the point of Balance you can put them down or unbalance them with the strength of one finger"
Hopefully you can now appreciate the importance of Balance?
Soon I will move onto the next area that should be understood BEFORE you start to learn PP's
Learn how to knock out ,learn how to knock someone out with one punch.Find out where the pressure points are on the body.Find out where to hit,how to hit.Learn how to double or even triple your striking power.Apply pressure points in punches, kicks, knees ,elbows, locks, chokes and strangles
This is a biggie... so will be answered in several parts
The first thing is to gain an understanding of how the body works from a Martial Arts perspective.
This does not mean that you need to know the names of points or even the names of major muscle groups etc.. it would of course help if you started to learn them as you go along.
First of all... whatever art you practice... take your best / favourite technique and really get to grips with it.. really understand it.. break it down into its constituent parts.
This means that you must analyse it to death... UNDERSTAND what every part of your body is doing to ensure the correct application of that technique. For a simple "jab" as an example.. you MUST know what your weight distribution is, how your feet are positioned, where you "push off" into the floor, how your body aligns, any "extra" movement that should not be there... where the correct power line of delivery is.. how you are balanced, how you keep your defenses,... the relationship between your shoulders, hips and ankles ... and MUCH more.
Then when you can break this down and understand it.. you know how to "re-build" the technique to make it more effective. Then and only then do you start to add in the Points... unless you have great technique to start with of course!
This sounds like a MAMMOTH journey if you are supposed to do this with EVERY technique?? Well.. it is not as long as it sounds... do this exercise with 4/5 techniques and you will begin to REALLY understand how to break down a technique... how to make it better.
Then you will be able to do this with any technique... THEN we can begin to add the points. I ALWAYS teach people BALANCE POINTS first.. understand how the body is balanced from both your and your opponents perspective and you will automatically begin to break down technique.
Just this exercise alone will dramatically improve your Martial Arts and Self Defense skills. Hope that helps
RUNNING TIME: 47 mins approx
FEATURING: Russell Stutely
Herol Graham
PRODUCTION QUALITY: Video quality is excellent shot from a single camera angle with occasional close ups for clarity. There are some slight sound problems with background noise but are not intrusive and everything is still clear and easily understood
INTRO: The DVD starts with a short introduction from Russell Stutely in which he explains that NAP have just “shown up” to film the secrets of the worlds elite in a secret location! Ignore the clunky set up and just focus on the high quality instruction
MAIN SECTION :
The first principle shown is how to hit hard with the right hand, covering alignment of the feet and his preferred choice of fist.
Small details are supplied about the whole principles of power striking which really do help enhance your power (I found these helpful and have 14 years striking experience and over 10 teaching),followed by how to strike properly and powerfully with an elbow, the alignment for maximum ko power is gone over in great detail and the precise manner and order that various body parts “fire”
The next strike covered is a bare knuckle shovel hook, with particular focus on the driving hip and heel and also the jab in a similar manner
The instruction here is very detailed and really breaks down the mechanics of striking hard with the whole body,it is then shown applied to a slap
The next section is Russell demonstrating on Herol the principles of balance. How to disrupt your opponents body to set up a strike or takedown.Various methods are shown attacking the elbows, knees ,hip, spine head etc.Although techniques are shown the main thing to take from this is the principles (as the title of the disc implies) you can then come up with numerous methods on your own.
OVERALL: This is a very good start to the set covering power striking and disrupting your opponents balance ,this is all solid material. There are no fancy esoteric moves just easy straight forward (but very useful) principles that can be learned from the DVD 10/10 this is my favourite Russell Stutely production so far

ABOUT ME : I am a third Dan black belt kick boxing instructor with over ten years teaching experience, and knowledge of various martial arts. I have a good eye for what works and what doesn't. I also have a number of students who have tried out these techniques with great success
Main section Starts with the elbow and how its position relates to a persons balance and how to use arm drags and pulls to move his opponent off balance to give you an advantageous position to strike or set up a throw
Next is the knee and where to strike or push it to take their balance. Next the elbow and knee are combined with gives some good take down principles
These need to be practised then you can apply them to your particular style
The small of the back is used combined with a hand on the head leading to a harsh takedown. A slow progression and safety are emphasised throughout and how to move from manipulating one balance point to another
It continues all round the body in this manner and also shows how the body can be manipulated with push pull motions and how head positioning can affect balance.
A training method is shown to use balance points against a puncher starting with a compliant partner and gradually removing the compliance and increasing the speed
This seems like a simple subject but its knowledge and application can have excellent results
OVERALL A short DVD which does a good job of explaining the basics of balance and how the body works and how this can be used to your combative advantage. Best for those with some experience but also has plenty of techniques for beginners
7/10

BAR 2010 (BODY ALARM REACTION) DVD AND DOWNLOAD REVIEW
BAR 2010
Running Time: 42 mins approx
Production Quality: Broadcast digital quality static camera and good sound quality ,no problems with sound quality
Intro The production starts with Russell Stutely explaining a little about pre fight situations and what is happening in an attackers mind. He then explains the basic mechanics of the BAR a hands up reflex action
Main section The first drill demonstrated is Russell standing with his eyes closed as his partner moves round him banging focus mitts together and as soon as he hears it Russell throws the BAR
Secondly it is demonstrated on a partner who is grabbing him, later shown with a head guard on with a harder strike which produces a good result of the attacker being knocked back and unable to fight for 3 seconds
Thirdly it is shown as a pre emptive strike again the partner is floored and out for about 6 seconds. It is a powerful shocking strike, giving you time to strike again or escape.
Later drills step up the pressure with the partner using a boxing glove grabbing and trying to strike Russell ,again the partner is floored instantly through a head guard and the strike was not thrown full power.
Pressure is stepped up again with both partners wearing shin guards and a low kick/sweep is added to the BAR,then extra strikes are applied
A waveform is applied and then BAR is applied to the arms and followed with a head butt
It ends with a discussion of the effectiveness in cutting down reaction time of BAR and how not to think of it as a fight finisher but more a set up for other techniques
OVERALL A quick easy DVD to watch which will give you a way to short circuit the decision making process give you a good first strike ,which buys you time to follow up or escape. Ideal for self defence and particularly for those without much time to practise. 8/10
